Directed by Ken Russel in 1993 adapted from D. H. Lawrence's novel and originally broadcast as the BBC TV mini series, this 2-DISC 4-episode drama depicts a supposedly forbidden love affair and examines the class system prevalent in early 20th century Britain.
Superb are the performances of Sean Bean as the gamekeeper and Joely Richardson as Lady Chatterley.
The film adequately shows the "Lady Chatterley phenomenon" in which the same sexual act can affect people in different ways at different times, depending on their subjectivity.

I think that the Lady Chatterley character in this unnecessarily over-long TV production should have been renamed "Lady Chatterbox".

IMO - With Connie Reid being married to a highly-educated, upper-class gentleman like Clifford Chatterley - You'd honestly think that she would've shown some class, herself, and chosen a better mate other than the likes of that grubby, peasant, gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors (but, I guess she wasn't after Mellors for his intellect - Was she?).

Anyway - This tale of early 20th century infidelity may have been truly shocking (back in 1929) when D.H. Lawrence originally wrote it - But, by today's jaded standards, it was pretty tame stuff, all round.

For Sean Bean fans it is a different role from what he so often portrays. I actually found it refreshing.

Class conflict & approach-avoidance abound in this most quintessentially English storyline from the early part of last century. Aside from the dream of the steaming black horse Desire, very little of Ken Russell's signature weirdness bleeds through, & often the nite scenes are filmed in broad daylight, oddly enough, but the final product is still pretty masterful in my opinion. The novel's legacy has focused on the lurid sexual detail that drew the ire of the obscenity squad & opened up a frankness in the discussion that might have been a little revolutionary, even, but a culture in conflict with its own hierarchies, & bodies trying to escape to a more perfect freedom, sexually & otherwise, are themes that also burn hot at the center here. Five stars running naked through a downpour...! CR

The book is an unintentional hoot (ever wonder about the origins of Puppetry of the Penis?), and Mellors is a righteous, working class pain, and yet.... Everyone in this version is so sweetly earnest, they carry you over the campy spots. Ken Russell knew how to do Lawrence, bless his late soul.

Excellent tale of how love makes the world go round, not social status, money or of what every one elses ideas are. Absolutely fabulous, dreamy story.
