The Rockwells have created a picture book which would make a good read-aloud for PreK and Kindergarten students as part of an introductory unit on Presidents' Day. It tells why we celebrate Presidents' Day, showcases a class preparing for and presenting a play about the four presidents represented on Mount Rushmore, and describes a class election. It also provides some basic factual information about these four presidents (years as president, political party, birthplace, birth & death dates) after the story.

The book defines Presidents' Day as "when we celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln." It explains the way presidents are elected, but it does not provide an adequate definition of what a president is or does, beyond saying that "each person votes for the person he or she believes will make the best leader." It then goes on to share information about Thomas Jefferson & Teddy Roosevelt, in addition to Washington and Lincoln, in the format of the class play, without explaining that in recent years, Presidents' Day has taken on additional meaning as a day to celebrate and learn about all of the U.S. presidents. Adults sharing this book with children will need to add their own explanations to supplement the information in the book.

My four year old has asked to read this book again and again. It's fun seeing the kids in a classroom doing activities, rather than just learning about the presidents. She also says she wants to be the first woman president now. It's a tough job to explain to her, so it is nice to have the simple explanation that a president is elected and that he or she is the leader of our country.
