Joe Haldeman "has quietly become one of the most important science fiction writers of our time" (Rocky Mountain News). Now he delivers a provocative novel of a man who stumbles upon the discovery of a lifetime-or many lifetimes. Grad-school dropout Matt Fuller is toiling as a lowly research assistant at MIT when, while measuring subtle quantum forces that relate to time changes in gravity and electromagnetic force, his calibrator turns into a time machine. With a dead-end job and a girlfriend who has left him for another man, Matt has nothing to lose taking a time machine trip himself-or so he thinks.

Meh. Cheekily average. Not all plot threads settled.

A fairly imaginative, innovative time travel story without taking the journey onto roads where other writers have already left deep ruts.

Excellent Sci Fi and I have read most of the masters. Joe Haldeman belongs up there at the top. However...was there a sequel? It kind of ends and needs more.

I thought this book was pretty interesting and the story compelling... until the last chapter. I am beginning to suspect, having also read "Forever Free," that this author is quite capable of writing an interesting story and putting characters in interesting situations, but in the end seems to resort to really contrived endings that leave me disappointed.

The Forever War was quite good. Read that.

Most of this is a mildly amusing romp, but the end is terribly disappointing. The central mystery of the story (who paid his bail?) is never resolved, at least not directly or in a way that makes sense. Haldeman has some interesting ideas here, but they never really coalesce into a coherent whole.
