Diction for SingersPaperback - 2003
Aimed at classical singers, voice teachers and vocal coaches, 'Sing French' presents the French language in its formal stage style (style soutenu) as appropriate for art song and opera. The sounds of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and the French word examples within the book are demonstrated on the accompanying compact disks, along with text analyses of seven poems followed by the vocal lines as set by Duparc, Fauré and Debussy. In Appendix Four, the piano/vocal scores of Duparc's Extase, Fauré's Au bord de l'eau, En sourdine, Lydia, Les berceaux and Debussy's Romance and Mandoline are presented in high and low keys. Each song includes an IPA transcription above the vocal line and a literal translation below. The three accompanying CD's contain demonstrations of all French words, poems and musical examples within the first three chapters. Performances of the songs are included followed by the solo piano accompaniments in two keys to help the student learn the songs.
