Robert Schnieder’s valiant efforts to make the definitive orchestral power pop record reached at least a temporary apotheosis with 2006’s “New Magnetic Wonder.” For die-hards, it’s really the last true Apples in Stereo album if you can’t accept the band without founding member, drummer and muse Hilary Sidney. Sidney’s two songwriting contributions are among the strongest tracks here, especially “Sunday Sounds.” The rest is prime Apples in Stereo, where Schneider’s growing obsession with ELO-inspired pop gloss is balanced with a more rock-oriented approach.
