I highly recommend this book. The author brilliantly writes from the perspective of a 9 year old and how Thomas perceives his own difficult childhood. Due to the abusive family dynamic, this book is not appropriate for children, though it is written at a grade 3 reading level. If a child is dealing with abuse, it would be a good book for a caring adult to read aloud and discuss. An excellent look at family roles for you sociology buffs.
