Cape Fear often gets overlooked from Scorsese's other classics but it is just as excellent as the best of the best of his catalog. It's superbly crafted and acted and is very complex and suspenseful. It's script is brilliant with how it uses the ins and outs of the law to incorporate a masterfully paced thriller. The cinematography is really something and it's Florida locations are perfect. The performances are all stellar. This is probably the last all out no holes barred performance of De Niro's career. Nick Nolte is terrific as his ex lawyer and dad of the family being terrorized. Jessica Lange is very good and Juliette Lewis is outstanding as the complex daughter which earned her an Oscar. Also Joe Don Baker is fantastic playing one of the best private detectives in film history. Cape Fear is much much more than your standard psycho thriller and it's extremely thrilling watching everything involving the law throughout the story.
I preferred this to the original. Great performance by DeNiro, and it's an enjoyable B movie remake by Scorsese. I found the end part of the film to be disappointing, but other than that it's an entertaining movie.
The original film with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum (Mitchum has a small role in the remake) is vastly better. The Scorsese version tries so hard to be complex and "deep" that it suffocates under the weight of its own pretensions. There is no single individual in the remake to attract the viewer's approval; which defeats the point of the story which is a take on the "good vs. evil" theme.
Very good remake. Lots of good acting (Nolte, De Niro), film production, etc.
Now have to go back and revisit the original 1962 Gregory Peck version.
Robert De Niro takes on so many marginal roles, it is important to watch this one to fully appreciate one of his best ones by far.
It was an average "thriller" type movie, but it is worth seeing just to see Robert de Niro play a bad guy!
A sometimes scary, totally unrealistic movie.
Nothing fantastic. Very average movie.
Nice remake with one scary Robert De Niro with a charming Southern twang.
