Where is God in the suffering of a mentally ill person? What happens to the soul when the mind is ill? How are Christians to respond in the face of mental illness? In "Darkness Is My Only Companion, "Kathryn Greene-McCreight confronts these difficult questions raised by her own mental illness--bi-polar disorder.
With brutal honesty, she tackles often avoided topics such as suicide, mental hospitals, and electroconvulsive therapy. Greene-McCreight offers the reader everything from poignant and raw glimpses into the mind of a mentally ill person to practical and forthright advice for their friends, family, and clergy. Her voice is a comfort to those who suffer from mental illness and an invaluable resource for those who love and support them.

This book really spoke to me. I suffer from severe depression and found this book to really help with my understanding of what it means to be a mentally ill Christian. I could really empathize with author (though I am not bipolar like her) and it was comforting to read about the sufferings of someone going through many of the same things I am going through.

Section 1: Facing Mental Illness; Chapter 1: Darkness; page 21: "...while therapists and counselors, psychiatrists and medications abound, I found no one to help me make sense of my pain with regard to my life before the triune God. I write this book, then, by way of an offering, as what I wish someone had written to help me make sense of the pain and the apparent incongruity of that agony with the Christian life..."
