First published in 1956, this much sought-after autobiographical recollection of Truman Capote's rural Alabama boyhood has become a modern-day classic. We are proud to be reprinting this warm and delicately illustrated edition of A Christmas Memory --"a tiny gem of a holiday story" ( School Library Journal , starred review). Seven-year-old Buddy inaugurates the Christmas season by crying out to his cousin, Miss Sook Falk: "It's fruitcake weather!" Thus begins an unforgettable portrait of an odd but enduring friendship between two innocent souls--one young and one old--and the memories they share of beloved holiday rituals.

This has been a favourite for most of my life. Dear Cousin Sook and her fruitcakes, her refusal to sell her Christmas tree, and her friendship and kind companionship to a lonely little boy. I consider this a "must-read" Christmas tradition, along with Dickens, and a viewing of "It's A Wonderful Life."

One of my favorite Christmas time stories. I use it as a reverse Turing test. If you read it and don't cry, then you must be a robot.

"One by one the household emerges, looking as though they'd like to kill us both; but it's Christmas, so they can't"

I love this book.

This novel was probably based on Capote's childhood memories. He was left by his parents in the care of older relatives. One cousin takes an interest in him --they fly kites and make fruitcakes every Christmas. This story is a moving tribute to this cousin.

Imagine a morning in late November. A coming of winter morning more than twenty years ago.
