Nothing new, nothing different. The Mars Volta scream and belt their way through with their usual mix of high-pitched vocals screaming about God knows what while thrashy guitars race across the fret board and the drums bash your brains into mush. There are moments of surprise, the usual interludes composed of Latin influenced calypso beats, quiet melodies and even some flamenco guitar, but it ain't nothing you ain't heard before from these guys. Why still the high rating then?
Because it's still as complex, strange, egotistical and interesting as anything else they've ever done. And that's something very few artists can manage. Regardless of what Pitchfork says.
Bizarre yet brilliant music.
