From a New York Times ad that has to explain what a pizza is, to Himalayan Pink Sea Salt, Kamp offers a highly readable history of food and fine eating in America from the 1950s to today.

I’m really glad I read this book!

The United States of Arugula chronicles the past 60 years of changing food culture in America. Although that may sound boring initially, this book is entertaining, thoroughly researched and very well written! It details (among other things) the success of Whole Foods, Dean & Deluca, Julia Child, the rise of James Beard, and the media event that is now the Food Network. While the overall tone is a spot gossipy, the book itself is entertaining, hilarious and quite clever. I would recommend this book to anyone, foodie or not.
