At over 2.5 hours this is one long movie. Too long in my view. Gong Li is easy on the eyes but I find the acting of some of the key male actors to be forced and exaggerated. I don't know how true the story is, but I am sure it can be told more convincingly and in less time.

Although at times the editing is a bit jerky, and the actors seem to smile all the time, no matter what is happening, the story is fantastic and compelling. Definitely worth watching - the subtitles are not the least bit distracting. It moves at a slow pace, but does not drag.

What you want in an adventure movie ...visually lush - well done and a bonus "carry - away" get to learn some history.

'The emperor and the assassin' is a film based on the events in life of the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. He ordered the army of the terracotta warriors to be built and buried with him to guard him in his after-life from the spirits of warriors he had ordered killed during his lifetime. These life-size terracotta warriors are still being excavated in Xi'an, China. Emperor Qin, the 'King Lear' of China, wished to be regarded as a historical figure who united China but he only succeeded in establishing a legacy of brutality and tyranny. Visually dazzling cinematography, a sweeping score and outstanding characters make this one of the finest epics to be ever put on film.
