Why was this remake necessary? What were the shortcomings of the original Gregory Peck, Lee Remick version that needed to be addressed? The plot development is virtually identical and neither the acting, the direction nor the soundtrack are significantly better than the 1975 version, so the whole exercise seems pointless. Why build a second statue of liberty or a new Egyptian pyramid? BTW the actor portraying Damien (Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick) has blue eyes (double recessive gene) whereas Julia Styles (who plays Katherine Thorn) has brown eyes. Wouldn't this have clued her in to the fact that she wasn't Damien's biological mother?
I consider this movie one of the best horror films ever made. The mysteries surrounding Damien were incredibly suspenseful, and kept me at the edge of my seat. The movie revived Gregory Peck's career, and spawned many other films in the "Antichrist" sub-genre of horror films. Jerry Goldsmith's score is my absolute favorite horror movie score.
