I simply don't understand any of Poliakoff's work despite a brilliant cast. Nighy seemed to sleepwalk the entire time. Listening to the special features/interviews did not help either.

re: subtitles (SDH) & closed captions: No closed-captions available; has subtitles for the deaf &/or hearing impaired. Subtitles are small, lower-case w/ blurry edges. Very poor quality subtitles &/or closed captions are the norm for BBC America releases. WGBH-Boston (which releases Masterpiece Theatre & other BBC releases in the US) is a tv industry "leader-of-the-pack" for poor quality, user-friendly closed-captions &/or subtitles.

Excellent cerebral film!! No shootings or gore, just a great story line and superb acting ... Some might call that "dullish" (as movie20 has below) but, for my husband and I it was right on the money!

Anyone who has struggled with retaining (and building) relationships with their teenage children will relate to Bill Nighy's character. The comment that when they go off to university it feels like "a small death" touched a raw nerve with me.

Enjoy this wonderful, gentle film ...

I agree with Ellington4 comment.

I would add though that I think you would have to be a Bill Nighy fan to be able to watch this movie because though it is very good and well acted, it is dullish. It is interesting how "loss" is a common thread among the characters and how it is deal with.

A delicate, emotionally moving film about grief and renewal. The always-excellent Bill Nighy plays a top public relations man who has emotionally lost his teenage daughter and has become barely functional as a result. Miranda Richardson is brilliant as a quirky mother who has physically lost her young son. Their story plays out against Millenium England, with the rise of Tony Blair's Labor party and the death of Princess Diana. This film is a follow-up to writer/director Stephen Poliakoff's fine "Friends and Crocodiles," which takes place in "Swinging London" of the 1960s and early 70s. Damian Lewis is the standout in that movie. Both movies represent Poliakoff's ability to tell complex, human stories within a larger political setting.
