Not a book I would normally pick up yet once I did, I felt like this was written by someone who could be my (smarter, better) sister. Really engaging, very personal, totally fascinating peek into a world in which I would never belong, written by someone who seems like she wouldn't belong either, yet managed a way into this incredible, successful life.

Also learned how to properly apply eyeliner. Even my sister complimented me on that improvement. So there's that.

An unsuccessful attempt to get through this book was revisited recently. This time, I'd just finished reading "How To Murder Your Life" (read it!) and its author (Cat Marnell) raved about this book. Attempt #2 was embarked upon.

This time, owing to such high praise, I made it through to the end though it's the type of thing where you could stop at any point, close the cover, and say "I got it". The book covers its author's career in the world of beauty magazines. It's an inside look at that lifestyle and career, with many pointers about actual beauty products.

Upon second read, it stood up. I enjoyed it enough but that's different than saying I'd recommend it. It's a-ok but falls far short of compelling.

One of the best reads in its category. Filled with humor and useful tips, the author takes you in a cheeky journey through the world of cosmetics and magazines.
