Romantic drama set in early WWII in Eastern Europe, the lengthy rambling story takes you through Romania, Egypt, and Syria. Shot on location, the background scenery is extraordinary, as the story unwinds. British ex-pats employed abroad as educators, so entangled in their academic world that they ignore the advance of the Nazis through Europe, only to be forced to flee as the Germans take over Romania. Somewhat dated, it is well worth a look, with one's finger on the fast forward during the lengthy boring dialogue scenes.

If you like the English dramas on PBS, I think you'll like this, too. Also, if you're a history buff, or a WWII buff, or an Emma Thompson fan, or if you simply like good TV drama, you'll probably like this series. I like all the foregoing, and am enjoying the TV series about this British couple in the early part of World War two. He's teaching at the university in Bucharest, reassuring his wife that of course the Nazis won't take over Romania. Then, of course, the British citizens seem to be stuck there. . . Slow build up of tension. Branagh and Thompson are SO good together; at the time of the filming they were still married to each other, and the chemistry feels very real. She gets so frustrated with her husband for wanting to remain in Romania long after it is safe to do so. But she can't leave him; their love for each other, usually just expressed subtly in a look or a small gesture, is completely believable. They have good friends who are part of their circle, and part of the danger. Well, you really should just watch it; you'll probably be glad.

Very interesting WWI study of countries we in the west don't often see examined during this time.

Love Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branaugh.

Written by a woman, this adventure is largely from a woman's perspective, that of a new bride during wartime in a period when it was more or less accepted that a man's interests come before a wife's happiness. Emma Thompson's character is a strong, intelligent woman who makes the best of a her situation despite feeling abandoned and disheartened by her husband's never-ending preoccupations. This is an oftentimes heart-wrenching story that nevertheless doesn't over sentimentalize. There is some doubt at the end whether the husband will ever be less insensitive.

Amazing high quality BBC drama mini-series. Doesn't get much better than this.

Top Notch entertainment for grownups! Not your typical "Masterpiece Theater" production, this series depicts in a sensitive and intelligent manner the evolving relationship of the two main characters as well as some of their friends. Its all about how two people in love come to truly love one another over time and against some of the most difficult history of recent times. I am constantly amazed by the details of this production: the camera angles that travel back in time, the perfect period makeup and costumes, the overall attention to detail is superb. Of course the original novels are a solid foundation that is here built upon with the solid bricks and mortar of a perfect production The acting by one and all is positively stunning. In particular the acting of Branagh and Thompson. Both are able to transmit emotions such as soul-deep anguish and despair simply by "doing nothing." This is acting. Put simply: this is one of the finest television productions of all times.

Great performances by Branagh and Thompson, fascinating story. I haven't read the books but will watch for them. Read Olivia Manning's biography on Wikipedia along with it, and watch for the times when the stories diverge!
