I had a nice first taste of foreign alternative cinema with this movie. It might not have all the glamor and glitz of a typical blockbuster or even a regular Hollywood drama imo but the grainy early 90's look and "French new wave" inspired cinematography helps stimulate a dreary emotional style which isn't quite realism but is certainly less flashy than most Hollywood movies. It helps to show the cop's heartache. I don't think that with this movies focus on mulling for past gf's and looking/grieving for love that this is a typical romance movie like a chipper American rom-com.A few parts felt like they were left inconclusively unexplained (like why the blonde haired lady with the sunglasses was shooting up ppl even if I do know she's was a drug dealer) but it was an okay movie and interesting b/c of these aspects. If I was in a relationship and got cut off I can imagine this movie would've felt better/spoke to me more `_` .

This film is almost 20 years old but still holds its position as one of the best films by director Wong Kar-Wei, a now-famous director with no shortage of followers around the world. It is about loneliness resulting from lost love, and the protagonists (two of them) attempting to reconnect to people and the world around them. The film is a bit artsy, surreal, and avant-garde in its style even by today's standard so not all people will like it. But for the same reason some would love it as a work of art. I like the film, but have problem with one of the key characters talking to inanimate objects at home - over and over again. Anyhow, it is definitely worth a watch for serious film fans, or for those that are in love, or have just lost it.

fantastic film which deals with isolation in relation to love and how this isolation can lead to further loneliness and a potential for the inability to properly connect with others.

A gritty love digression on the streets of China. Good to watch on a slow night when you have a good attention span. What it lacks in plot and action, it compensates for in characters and cinematography.

Perhaps I'm too young to truly appreciate this movie as others do. Don't get me wrong. Chungking Express is a wonderfully made flick. The story is good and the acting is fantastic, but I can't empathize with the characters as I would like to. I can surely see how many people can, but unfortunately I cannot. I'm sure that when I watch this movie a few years from now, I'll love it on a level that I can't imagine at this stage in my life.

An excellent romantic movie set in Hong Kong just a few years before the end of British rule. Socially awkward but really memorable characters, and excellent filming style.
