Alien Resurrection has some nice set pieces, the ship definitely looks like it's aged and creepy. However that was about the best thing going for this film. This film was good for a standard horror movie, but does not hold up to scrutiny of the standards of the 1st 2 films.
The film tried to establish a dark tone, but the dialog doesn't allow it, as it has lighter comedic tone. The film suffers due to those 2 forces not existing well together. The cast is your standard 1 dimensional cast where there is no depth, and lots of overacting.
I have seen this film several times, and as entertainment and a horror film it's fine and does its job ok. Its got a built in audience of Alien fans, and lots of well known character actors, and the Aliens are scary.
Anyone who complains that the Alien prequels are bad have forgotten how terrible this is.
Laughably bad, a disgrace to the original. Everything from the acting to the effects is beyond horrible.
I know I shouldn't but I got a kick out of this one. Like Aliens, we get a new side to Ripley. It's not necessarily a good one, but it was wickedly enjoyable to watch. She is both herself and not for plot related reasons I won't spoil, and navigates the new setting with her usual brand of sass and bullheaded stubbornness. The movie is not great, has some serious issues, but it's still a lot of fun.
It would be nice to remove the spoiler from the first sentence. I've watched Alien and Aliens and was seeing which one was the 3rd movie (which for some reason is the only one the VPL doesn't have out of 6 alien movies). Turns out this is not the 3rd movie but now I know the main character is going to die in Alien 3.
I had no idea that Joss Whedon directed this.
Feminist alien, written by writer of FIREFLY / SERENITY. I liked it a lot.
