In 1854, when the battle of Inkerman in the Crimea was over, five survivors were hurriedly assembled in front of the camera. A sixth figure added symmetry to the group - Master Georgie. In the distance a young woman circled round and round like a bird above a robbed nest.

This story is of a young doctor, George Hardy, as told by the people around him. It is a love story, an historical novel of the Crimean War, a social comment novel, all related in a very reserved, matter-of-fact manner. It can be confusing as each part, or plate as Bainbridge calls it, is from the perspective of someone different and you don't always clue in right away who it is. I found the Crimean War scenes to be quite vivid in their portrayal of the appalling conditions - certainly not the pomp and glory we often are dished up. This is a tough book to read and I would not recommend it unless you want to read something in the Victorian style.

Heroine is orphan adopted by upper class family. She is besotted with young man of family, who becomes a doctor. He and brother-in-law go to Crimean War to treat casualties. For some reason, women go also, maybe it starts out just as a travel jaunt, then they end up embroiled in the war. Women return to England except for heroine. She seems very attached to Georgie & wife's children. Like US Civil War in same century, more are killed by disease and pestilence than battle.
