"To read this book is to hear the voices of the ancestors and spirits telling us where we came from, who we are, and where we must go." --Maxine Hong Kingston

In its extraordinary range of character and culture, Almanac of the Dead is fiction on the grand scale. The acclaimed author of Ceremony has undertaken a weaving of ideas and lives, fate and history, passion and conquest in an attempt to re-create the moral history of the Americas, told from the point of view of the conquered, not the conquerors.

In this truly amazing work of storytelling, Silko not only tells the story of some of the Indigenous folks of the US, but also the way in which stories are told. In what sounds like oral storytelling at times, Silko weaves together stories that converge through time and place in the haunted landscape of the borderland Southwest. Also interesting to see how a lot of her predictions in the book have become eerily true. Deals with some of the complicated dynamics between Marxism and Indigenous autonomy. Essential reading!
