Prof. Otto Lidenbrock has to learn the truth. So Lidenbrock, his nephew Axel, and the Icelandic hunter Hans climb down the cone of an arctic volcano and into...

A realm of awesome mystery, weird beauty--and deadly peril. Where vast caverns and endless mazes lead to an underground ocean, living fire, and prehistoric monsters. But where any wrong turn, any misstep, can leave the explorers forever trapped in the eternal darkness of a planet-sized tomb...

Buried alive at the heart of the world....

Excellent book! It's quite different from the movie versions that I've seen. But I loved the original book plot; very entertaining.

Jules Verne is one of the fathers of modern science fiction and therefore this should be read as a classic of the genre.

Jules Verne's "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" was fun to read. Despite being written in the early 1860s, the English translation used in the Puffin Classics edition of the story didn't feel old or quaint. In this edition Axel is Axel rather than Harry. I loved the humour in the story as the story unfolds in front of Axel's somewhat skeptical eyes. Or, is it teenage rebellion. Either way, Axel was a great foil to the Professor. Great read in many ways. Loved it.

This is a wonderful novel, but a very poor translation. In fact, it is probably giving it too much credit to call it a translation at all, given the number of things that get changed from the original French version, even the names of the main characters. Verne's Professor Liddenbrock becomes Professor Hardwigg, and his nephew Axel has his name changed to Harry. I noticed that the translator-adaptor's name wasn't even given for the book. Maybe the person didn't want to be asssociated with it. My advice would be to avoid this version and look for a proper English translation of Verne's marvellous fantasy.

A wonderful, adventurous tale.
