Kate Shugak returns to her roots in the far Alaskan north, after leaving the Anchorage D.A.'s office. Her deductive powers are definitely needed when a ranger disappears. I have never read any of Dana Stabenow's novels, but I am looking for a series to sink my teeth into. I love winter, I've never been to Alaska, and I love a good murder mystery. My internet search tells me this is where I should start. I think I'm in for a treat. Stay tuned!

Would like to read more of this series. Enjoyable read. Liked the change of a mystery set in Alaska, with it's neighbour, Canada.

Genuinely enjoyed the hard-boiled dialogue and the snippets of Aleut culture. And the writing triggered a craving for moose steak I never knew I had.
However, if even a total mystery noob like yours truly can finger the bad guy -- with one-third of the book left to go -- it remains unclear how gripping the rest of Kate's adventures will be.

I discovered Stabenow and her Kate Shugak character while perusing the library shelf. I love her writing. I really enjoy mystery novels. The added bonus for this series is the location of a fly-in territory of Alaska. Makes me want to go visit. Kate Shugak is a great character as well. What an amazing, smart, strong woman.
Dana is a wonderful story teller.

Easy to see why she won an Edgar, everything works and the locale is very interesting. If you wondered what people do in those long bleak winters this writer is going to give us some clues.

I love mysteries. This is a good one. There is a cast of characters that you wouldn't meet anywhere else. Recommended by Diana Gabaldon "Outlander" series. I plan to read the rest of the Kate Shugak series.

I've read most of this series, but find it of middling interest. While the Alaska scenery is fascinating, the characters tend more toward irritating.

This first book in the series has Aleut Kate Shugak coming home from Anchorage to her homestead in the Park, where she's known to every Park rat, for good or ill. She's recovering, physically and emotionally from her last job in Anchorage, and working as a PI with her half husky, half wolf partner. Sets the stage for the entire series, with many of the continuing characters already well rounded. Alaska's definitely one of the main characters here.

If mystery in a cold climate warms your heart, then you will love this series. Kate Shugak is an ex investigator whose last job ended badly when she caught the suspect in the act and killed him. Now she works alone with her half wolf partner, Mutt. There is a hint of romance in her background- but that is part of the mystery too.
