The dysfunctional Dickinson family appears in a new light, with a more sympathetic portrayal of Sue Dickinson, Emily Dickinson's sister-in-law. Austin Dickinson's lengthy, well-documented affair with the much younger Mabel Loomis Todd is scandalous even by 21st century standards, so one can only imagine how horrified the Dickinson sisters were in staid, small town Amherst. In this easy read, the author is relatively sympathetic to all the participants in this sad story.
