In this collection of short essays, Annie Dillard--the author of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and An American Childhood--illuminates the dedication, absurdity, and daring that characterize the existence of a writer. This is a terrific and crisply written little book. Evocative of wonder and pressure, and includes some - I should hope - good and useful advice communicated in a manner that is easily remembered and emphasized (eg., 'aim for the block' (=don't get caught up in literary stylistic matters, take care of what you write about and the writing takes care of itself), not save an idea or a passage for something else, and write something big and lasting rather than ephemeral pieces, among others).
