From Douglas Adams, the legendary author of one of the most beloved science fiction novels of all time, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , comes a wildly inventive novel--in trade paperback for the first time--of ghosts, time travel, and one detective's mission to save humanity from extinction.

We solve the whole crime
We find the whole person
Phone today for the whole solution to your problem
(Missing cats and messy divorces a specialty)

Douglas Adams, the "master of wacky words and even wackier tales" ( Entertainment Weekly ) once again boggles the mind with a completely unbelievable story of ghosts, time travel, eccentric computer geniuses, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the end of the world, and--of course--missing cats.

Read this back when it first came out, but the sequel made a much larger impression on me. Our "detective" does lots of investigating but not much detecting, and doesn't show up until a good ways into the book. After that, the story really gets going, and everything mentioned is for a reason. Loved the ending.

Looking forward to rereading the second book, and then the third, which I hardly remember. Also planning to check out the BBC television show based on this book soon - it was highly rated. As for the book, 3½ stars.

If you don't give me a character to care about, I won't keep reading. If you don't give a narrative that flows or makes any sort of sense, I won't keep reading to your brilliant finale where it all suddenly makes sense. Sorry, I'm not that tolerant. I have better things to do that slog though unsympathetic characters doing stupid things with unbelievable results in the hope that it will make sense in the end. Nope, I won't even do it for Douglas Adams. Sorry.

Have you ever tried Zen Navigating? It sometimes works, too! Even if it doesn't, you can end up in some pretty odd places.

One of my all-time favorite books. Unlike another commenter, I find I can read this over and over. I especially enjoy the way he employs and describes music throughout. Highly recommended!

Another in a series of hilarious books by Adams. He will be missed.

hilarious! (I didn't read this when it first came out so it's new to me.) I didn't find it to be a fast read, however as it is carefully crafted.

Light humor, memorable characters, unpredictable. Leaves a few too many things hanging (or unsatisfactorily resolved), but one scene in the end drove me to poetry.

The book is not reminiscent of Adams' humour in Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Nevertheless, it is a worthwhile read.

Dirk Gently is a "holistic detective" that believes in the "interconnectedness of all things." He also primarily uses his agency to find missing cats, which invariably send him to strange and exotic places and even results in him saving the world.

Hilariously funny yet it really makes you think. It's a mystery novel where every little detail is important and everything comes full circle in the end.

"This time there would be no witnesses."

The first time this happened Steve Mander sat bolt upright in bed. This was shortly before prelim exams in the second year, and what Dirk had just said, or judiciously mumbled, sounded remarkably like a very likely question in the Economic History paper.
