Add a CommentAfter the overly extensive description of every last detail in the first three chapters, I gave up. Colin Dexter's heavy-handed focus on detail doesn't help move the story along. Just get on with it, a reader's imagination is a good thing.
Such a strong first book-no wonder it lead to twelve more books in the series.
If you like British mysteries and haven't read Morse yet, you're in for a treat.
Dexter takes you on a journey that isn’t going to disappoint. Loved the book and the usual Lewis/Morse innuendos
I loved this mystery novel. It was the second one I've read by Colin Dexter.
First Inspector Morse book
After enjoying Endeavor and Inspector Lewis on PBS, I thought I would go and read all the Morse novels. I loved this, very suspenseful and a great way to stretch your vocabulary!
really great read, a whole afternoon's worth...nice intro to the series highly recommended
Dexter's first Morse. Excellent. Keeps you guessing to the end. Unlike his other's, he hasn't included quotes at the start of each chapter.
