Aretha Franklin was and is one of my favorite singers of all time. This film takes place in the 1970's when Aretha was working on a gospel album and wanted to make a documentary showing what she was working on. It takes place in the church she was brought up in I mean she was the daughter of a minister and church was part of life till the day she died. This documentary was never finished and it was never meant to be released because Aretha did not want to be released however, people went against her wishes and published this documentary anyway after she passed on. Through it you can enjoy the amazing voice of Aretha Franklin and enjoy the experience of her making the gospel album she planned to make that did make it to the top of the charts. Enjoy this film and experience the amazing magic that is the voice of Aretha Franklin.

In Psalms it says “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” Aretha makes an electrifying, soulful declaration of her divine gift and talent. Lovely to see her in her traditional milieu. The daughter of a Baptist minister--who makes an appearance on day two of her performance—recalls speaking to his dry cleaner after that person saw Aretha perform on television and the dry cleaner comments she was okay, but they missed her gospel music. Reverend Franklin replies, “She never left the church.” This DVD; filmed in 1972 at a Baptist church in Watts has the Reverend James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir as back up for Aretha. Even if you are not religious, you will experience the joy of those united in faith and expressed so beautifully by Aretha.

Film footage from Aretha Franlkin's recording of the live album Amazing Grace. Watching her in her prime sing and interact was spell binding. Anyone who enjoys her music at any stage in her career and/or gospel will not be disappointed.

We have rarely been so disappointed in a movie. While the atmosphere in this church in 1972 was really electric and entertaining, all but one of the hymns she sang were sung with lengthy pauses in between all the words. Heartfelt to be sure, but not recognizable. And boring. Such a wonderful singer, yet only the 3rd hymn had any tempo! This is not the way she sang it in the preview. We felt robbed.
A great highlight was Reverend L. C. Franklin, her father, a very interesting minister. He talked about her childhood, very moving. So a 2 out of 10 rating.

Unreleased until this year, this is one of the most remarkable concert films I've ever seen.
