The ghosts of the past come calling in a spellbinding heart-stopper from the "Queen of the Northern Gothic."

After the end of her marriage, Kate Granger has retreated to her parents' home on Lake Superior to pull herself together--only to discover the body of a murdered woman washed into the shallows. Tucked in the folds of the woman's curiously vintage gown is an infant, as cold and at peace as its mother. No one can identify the woman. Except for Kate. She's seen her before. In her dreams...

One hundred years ago, a love story ended in tragedy, its mysteries left unsolved. It's time for the lake to give up its secrets. As each mystery unravels, it pulls Kate deeper into the eddy of a haunting folktale that has been handed down in whispers over generations. Now, it's Kate's turn to listen.

As the drowned woman reaches out from the grave, Kate reaches back. They must come together, if only in dreams, to right the sinister wrongs of the past.

This is the best of Webb's five ghost stories!

Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ghostly mystery from the past….or the present?? The lines here are definitely blurred...

Kate has run back to her parents after suffering an emotional trauma. Just as she’s settling in, she becomes embroiled in a murder case...but is this case as current as the local police believe? Why does Kate know so many details about this woman? And why is she suddenly dreaming about her so vividly?

Needing some space from all the drama Kate moves in with her cousin Simon, in the charming nearby town of Wharton. Unfortunately for Kate, you can run but you cannot hide, and with events from the past suddenly crossing over to the present, will we finally find out just what happened to the lady in the lake? And will there be ties to her own family? The story of Addie and Jess is also revealed...but just what do they have to do with anything? Kate, Simon and police detective Nick won’t rest until they find out just who killed the woman, and why.

Pros: Lovely, descriptive writing...the descriptions of Wharton make me want to visit this special town! This book also had a great, unexpected ending.

Cons: Perhaps a bit cliche/predictable in places...and I wasn’t as spooked as I usually am while reading a Wendy Webb novel.

Still very good...supernatural/fantasy elements run throughout this novel, so if that’s not your thing...stay away. If you enjoy a good ghost story every now and then, you will enjoy it.
