For the first time, the full, explosive record of the unthinkable: how a US president compromised American foreign policy in exchange for financial gain and covert election assistance.

Looking back at this moment, historians will ask if Americans knew they were living through the first case of criminal conspiracy between an American presidential candidate turned commander in chief and a geopolitical enemy. The answer might be: it was hard to see the whole picture. The stories coming in from across the globe have often seemed fantastical: clandestine meetings in foreign capitals, secret recordings in a Moscow hotel, Kremlin agents infiltrating the Trump inner circle...

Seth Abramson has tracked every one of these far-flung reports, and now in, Proof of Collusion , he finally gives us a record of the unthinkable--a president compromising American foreign policy in exchange for financial gain and covert election assistance. The attorney, professor, and former criminal investigator has used his exacting legal mind and forensic acumen to compile, organize, and analyze every piece of the Trump-Russia story. His conclusion is clear: the case for collusion is staring us in the face. Drawing from American and European news outlets, he takes readers through the Trump-Russia scandal chronologically, putting the developments in context and showing how they connect. His extraordinary march through all the public evidence includes:

-How Trump worked for thirty years to expand his real estate empire into Russia even as he was rescued from bankruptcy by Putin's oligarchs, Kremlin agents, and the Russian mafia.

-How Russian intelligence gathered compromising material on him over multiple trips.

-How Trump recruited Russian allies and business partners while running for president.

-How he surrounded himself with advisers who engaged in clandestine negotiations with Russia.

-How Trump aides and family members held secret meetings with foreign agents and lied about them.

By pulling every last thread of this complicated story together, Abramson argues that--even in the absence of a report from Special Counsel Mueller or a thorough Congressional investigation--the public record already confirms a quid pro quo between Trump and the Kremlin. The most extraordinary part of the case for collusion is that so much of it unfolded in plain sight.

Behold the worst president in the history of our country. It's no mystery why he casts such a profound spell over the poorly-educated, the barely employed, the financially desperate, and congenitally gullible.

An impressive piece of work that most people won't complete.

If you are a Trump-hater, the first few pages will confirm your bias and you would find no additional reason to read further while wielding it as a Bible to thump on. If you are a Trump-supporter, you will find the first few pages disturbing to that bias but "not proof enough" and so dismiss it early.

For the very few out there sitting on the fence about Trump, it is a difficult book to read because of the way it is written. Pages and pages of facts with occasional intriguing events to bludgeon you and make you numb to anything but what the author tries to conclude.

People who like to solve a good mystery on their own with partial clues presented will enjoy this book to play that game and compare later with the outcome of the Mueller investigation. Plenty of clues covered in this book to use.

To set this book in context, the title (probably chosen by the Publisher for commercial reasons) is misleading. This book isn't proof in any form of finality (Q.E.D). It is as the author labels the Introduction chapter "A Theory of the Case" based on connecting the dots of all the public information that is already out there (the author makes no claims of any private/anonymous sources, privileged information or interviews) in the media to provide evidence to a constructed theory as to what may have happened in Trump's past and present. It fills gaps of evidence so far with a plausible theory but not a conclusive one.

It is a very plausible theory (even if seems overly complex and conspiratorial) and better than most theories about Trump and quite likely that the theory will largely be proven right after the Mueller Investigation (a few of the conclusions have already been proven to be correct from what has transpired since then).

But if a prosecutor were to argue the case like this in front of the Jury, it would lead to a hung jury. And this is the problem with this book.

Where the book fails is in structuring it in a way that would make it easy to consume for an average reader. A more hierarchical rather than chronological structure where the alleged transgressions of Trump or the people around him could be collected into a few items (like multiple charges in a court case) at a high level and each explained as to its nature and implications in a page or two would have been much more effective. The assertion could then supported by building the case for that in increasing detail ("peeling an onion"). This would have led to a far better understanding to an average reader of the various unethical if not potentially criminal issues that are dogging Trump's business dealings as well as his political career.

But more than Trump, this book is an indictment of journalism whose failures are part of what led to the current situation. The book, relying primarily on previously published material in the media, also exposes the very weakness of current Journalism which is better at exposing via a single whistle-blower passing on a smoking gun under the bridge than exposing a mob-like operation along various fronts where the assumptions of normality or behavior goes out the window. Journalists have largely covered news as transactional for each individual event or discovery and have failed to connect the dots that not only miss the larger implication but often makes it possible for false narratives to be established by those that they are trying to cover.

This book would serve a far better purpose to be used as a case study in all Journalism schools (the author does teach Journalism) than influencing the general public. The Mueller investigation would be far more conclusive either way.
