Place: What is now France and Spain.
Time: 20,000 years ago.

What did humans act like? Nobody knows for sure. What did they dress like? Little evidence survives, but people who study pre-history can make guesstimates. What did they say--If they said anything? No recording devices, so we can't even guess. One thing is certain. If a mother was worried about her young son venturing out on his first hunting expedition--she definitely wouldn't have turned to the boy's father and say, "I love him with my whole heart."

And dialogue like that renders this movie a fairy-tale. That's too bad. Because there's a lot that's good here.

The cinematography is stunning. The vistas are fabulous (BC, Alberta, California amongst other places.) Scenically, Alpha is spectacular. But it's not about nice pictures--there's a story here, mainly about the "bonding" between a young man and a wolf (played well by an actual part-wolf.) It is in its story-telling that Alpha fails in the most frustrating way: it keeps demanding that its cave-man (and attractive cave-woman) characters adopt the attitudes and sentiments of highly civilized cultures when they likely weren't much past the grunt-and-snarl of pre-speech. And they keep talking in complete sentences to sometimes express them. Nobody made that mistake when Quest For Fire was made, decades ago. (That unusual movie had other mistakes, but not that one.)

Many people will take their kids to this movie or watch it with them at home, because it's a "nice" movie. That's my point. Life 20,000 years ago was a lot of things. "Nice" wasn't one of them.

"Alpha" is a movie for those who love animals and history. I personally think that this movie wasn't the best. Children under twelve would be bored.

This movie was SO GOOD!! I'll be honest, I was cooing over the dog the entire time, but it was a fantastic story line that kept me entertained without rushing through. All of the spoken words are in a different language with English subtitles, but I liked the unfamiliar words, it contributed to a foreign effect.

Also, the dog actor, Chuck, was amazing. Definitely see this movie!!

Excellent acting...even the dog who played the "wolf" was great. Watch the extras after you view the film about the dog. Amazingly, all English subtitles embedded --no take away from the action and interaction what so ever.
