Opinion

From Library Staff

Based on the first in the romantic comedy trilogy by Kevin Kwan, this movie was one of the few bright spots of 2018. Starring Constance Wu (who is nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, the movie has also been nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Only made it through about an hour of this. Just not one for us. Guess I can understand why some might like it. We did not.

Terrible film. Stopped watching half way through hoping it would get better given all the hoopla about it.

a fun film about love, easy to watch and great way to spend an evening

This was an enjoyable, escapist film. The settings and costumes were gorgeous. The leading couple was charismatic and charming. It had lots of funny bits, lots of over the top crazy bits and it was enjoyable to watch from start to finish. It was refreshing to watch a romantic comedy that was so unabashedly frothy and focused on romance.

Terrible. Everything about this movie is wrong - its celebration of extreme wealth, its clichés, its stereotypes, its ending...

I've read the whole Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, so I was extremely excited to see the movie adaption of the first book. I wasn't disappointed. Crazy Rich Asians is a classic and delicious rom com from the lenses of a different culture, with a dash of future mother-in-law drama and upper crust snobbery. Constance Wu, one of my favorite actors, sparkles as Rachel Chu. Henry Golding as Nick Young is old Hollywood handsome and a bright new star. Awkwafina steals the show as Rachel's kooky best friend, Peik Lin Goh. The whole cast is phenomenal and I'm always happy to see people from a different ethnic group get a seat at the Hollywood Elite table. The food, clothes, and filming locations are so decadent that I want to make Singapore my next vacation destination.

I have a serious vision problem in my right eye this weekend and can't watch tv or any videos until I have surgery on my right eye. Probably need to have this moved to after June 1st if possible. Will try to call Garden Home on Monday about it if I have time before going to opthomologist. I didn't see the notice that it was in until after hours on Saturday. I tried to figure out how to change it on line, but probably just messed it up as I am a one eyed wonder today. Thanks. Donna Nesbitt 23614012621638

The supporting cast transformed a morally challenging book into an enjoyable comedy. The lavish, flamboyant Peik Lin and Oliver silenced my critical voice and made me laugh.

In a world of remakes and sequels, this Cinderella story feels extremely fresh. Finally the "princess" has some personality and the ability to live a full life even if she chooses to reject her prince.

Many quotes in IMDb already, thanks to the contributors, including this one:

Eleanor Young: There is a Hokkien phrase 'kaki lang'. It means: our own kind of people, and you're not our own kind.
Rachel Chu: Because I'm not rich? Because I didn't go to a British boarding school, or wasn't born into a wealthy family?
Eleanor Young: You're a foreigner. American - and all Americans think about is their own happiness.

Note: kaki lang (Hokkien pronunciation of 自家人, meaning “my own people”)
