A fresh, charming rom-com perfect for fans of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Boy Meets Boy about Nathan Bird, who has sworn off happy endings but is sorely tested when his former best friend, Ollie, moves back to town.

Nathan Bird doesn't believe in happy endings. Although he's the ultimate film buff and an aspiring screenwriter, Nate's seen the demise of too many relationships to believe that happy endings exist in real life.

Playing it safe to avoid a broken heart has been his MO ever since his father died and left his mom to unravel--but this strategy is not without fault. His best-friend-turned-girlfriend-turned-best-friend-again, Florence, is set on making sure Nate finds someone else. And in a twist that is rom-com-worthy, someone does come along: Oliver James Hernández, his childhood best friend.

After a painful mix-up when they were little, Nate finally has the chance to tell Ollie the truth about his feelings. But can Nate find the courage to pursue his own happily ever after?

This one took some time to get into, and I don't think I ever really fell in love with the characters, but it was an enjoyable short read.

I very much so disliked this story. It was great in the sense that every character is like something I’ve never seen. I love the portrayal of the uniqueness of everyone. However, the characters themselves weren’t all that amusing. They simply weren’t acting old enough to deal with the minimal “problems” going on in their lives. It would be difficult to think of one scene in this story that was actually entertaining or relevant to the story. There were about a thousand different minor conflicts that only took two pages to get resolved....and not a single one of those were rememberable. This is possibly going to be a waste of your time.

About halfway through this book I decided that the title made no sense whatsoever. It doesn't really read as a romance, or as an epic--rather, this is the story of teenagers who feel like real teenagers muddling through problems that feel like real teenage problems. Some days things seem great and everyone is flirting and laughing and hopeful, and then the very next day everyone is fighting with each other and not saying why and there's all this tense bitterness and none of it makes sense or seems like it could be overcome. So, you know, like real life, which I actually loved a lot.

Then I finished the book and I decided that the title was perfect, so. I think some people won't like this book--people who are mad about all the queer and interracial relationships, but also people who want a tighter, more directional story with more 'heroic' characters. But I love its realness, and strongly recommend it.
