In a film Variety called an "elegantly crafted and illuminating portrait of the singular jazz legend," director John Scheinfeld explores the life, spiritual journey and music of John Coltrane, whose recorded works range from deeply expressive ballads to wildly expressive "sheets of sound." Scheinfeld crafts a story that reveals and affirms the impact Trane had on a variety of musicians, politicians, educators and artists - including Kamasi Washington, President Bill Clinton, Common, the Doors' John Densmore, Dr. Cornel West, Yasuhiro Fujioka, and many others. And, because the saxophonist did few recorded interviews, the words of John Coltrane are spoken by Denzel Washington. In addition to one-of-a-kind interviews, featured in the main film are never-before-seen home movies and photographs; rare TV performances from Europe and America, including one of the few occasions when Coltrane and his classic quartet performed his masterwork, "A Love Supreme," live in concert; never-before-seen documents from Coltrane's U.S. Navy file; and much more.

This is an exceptional documentary.

It deals with a genius composer/musician who seeks with his music to uplift listeners to reach GOD.

A tough task-- so well done.

Very enjoyable bio. If you're unfamiliar with Coltrane's music, borrow the companion soundtrack.

Great documentary on saxophonist John Coltrane. Covers his life and music, has commentary from his children and musicians who played with him. Dr. Cornel West discusses his impact on black music and history. Bill Clinton, Sonny Rollins and Carlos Santana also contribute comments. The DVD starts with 2 minutes of floating around space and I’m thinking I’m going to have to turn this off if it is some sort of hippy dippy space out, but hang in there, the space trip only lasts for 2 minutes. In some documentaries on musicians, you don’t get to hear much music only the gory or dull details of their lives. This DVD has excellent Coltrane music throughout and it does cover his personal life; he was on drugs for a while, dropped them cold turkey, played with Miles Davis but left to create his own music, his own sound, was married twice, but the DVD doesn’t dwell on any of these things. Coltrane says his “music was the spiritual expression of what I am.” I was impressed that the man seemed to think, feel, live and play sonically. Having no musical aptitude myself you can only appreciate such genius and talent. Now I need to dig out my copy of A Love Supreme.

Super documentary devoted to the career of musical giant John Coltrane. Lots of excellent commentary, none more so than that of Cornel West. Plenty of great film footage too, particularly of the classic quartet. The film motivated me to acquire several Alice Coltrane records. Amazing stuff.
