Dysfunctional family, stupid criminals, characters who break the wall between film and viewers...well done film worth watching. Wonder how much is true.

Way too much swearing! The mental and physical abuse was oppressive. I feel it should be rated "R" for that. I didn't laugh once! The so-called "incident" and the scenes between her ex-husband and bodyguard took up way too much of the movie, in my opinion, so I skipped through to the end. The only redeeming parts for me were the skating and Tonya's relationship with her coach. I think the movie would have been better if it focused more on Tonja's skating career.

Great fast moving pace kept surprising me. Backed by killer sound track it takes you back to the good old 90's. Beautiful australian actress Margot Robbie plays Tonya, she is a great. Paul Walter Hauser, who plays Shawn Tonya's secret agent body guard is hilarous. LaVona, Tonja's mother played by Allison Janney won an oscar for best supporting actress. Both Paul Hauser and Allison Janney are scene stealers both funny in different ways. Margot Robbie received her first oscar nomination for best actress. This woman is going to be a huge star. I'm rooting for her. 4.5 stars

A good movie about some truly terrible people. Robbie and Stan are excellent but Allison Janney steals the show (Oscar well deserved). Lots of swearing and violence but it reflects the time and circumstances of the people involved. This is one movie not easily forgotten.

I actually really enjoyed this movie. I remember first hand the circus that surrounded the whole Kerrigan/Harding affair at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, so it was interesting to see the other side of the story. Americans seem to love their heroes and villains, and during this hoopla, obviously the virtuous Kerrigan was cast as the hero and the 'trashy' Harding was cast as the villain by the news media. In my opinion, this movie basically casts Harding as an anti-hero. She was not a perfect, monied princess, she was a working class citizen who skated to alternative music, hand sewed her own costumes, and refused to be type cast. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and especially the soundtrack. Also, there is a reason that Alison Janney won an Oscar for her portrayal as Harding's mother.
Please note, there is a lot of swearing in this movie. So if F-Bombs set your heart a-twitter, perhaps you should skip this one

This is an awful movie: constant swearing using the same 2 or 3 swear words endlessly over and over by nearly every character except her coach. Endless violence towards Tonya at every stage of her life by her mother and boyfriend/husband. Constant poverty, constant smoking, constant drinking. Her life seemed to be dominated by those 2 plus her bf's violent friend. Everyone was manipulative, everyone lied, everyone blamed someone else for their many problems. There is absolutely nothing uplifting or pleasant anywhere in the story. Allison Janney did not so much act as she avoided acting; she had no affect at all. I do not understand why the movie got nominated for an Academy Award, but then I didn't like any of the other nominees, either, that I have seen so far. The only positive comment I have is that I am profoundly glad I have not spent any money on any of these films. The only nominee that I haven't seen yet is "The Post," and I have hope, still, in its being worth watching.
This one was most definitely not.

This was ok. It switches between normal viewer watching events and narration of characters talking to the camera. Both Tonya and her husband have some serious psychological issues. Her husband is clearly abusive in it and she does show some patterns consistent with abused women that return to their abuser. Though I myself have suffered spousal abuse I can not understand personally why someone would return to a person that hurt them. If it's possible you keep away from that person and get on with your life.

Ah - Yes! - Welcome to the wonderfully glamorous (and, of course, highly rewarding) world of women's competitive professional figure skating.

And, looking at "I,Tonya" from my perspective - I'd say that it was the ultimate glorification of trash.

From its trashy characters, to its trashy situations, to its trashy violence, to its trashy dialogue, to its trashy everything - It was all just - TrashyTrashyTrashyTrashyTrashy Trash!!

And, being such absolute trash that it was - (And, in its shameless trashiness) - It actually stooped to the gutter-level mentality of encouraging the viewer to, literally, laugh out loud at what happened to Nancy Kerrigan (as though the whole incident was just a "slapstick" comedy).

Tsk. Tsk. Such utter trash that tries to pass itself off as worthwhile entertainment.

Doesn't show Portland ever in the movie and makes Portlanders look like stupid rednecks. Besides that a fine film.

I remember the whole Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan incident during the years it was happening. It was the talk of my neighbourhood and family gatherings for quite some time. I find it spooky seeing some of the old news broadcast scenes, and hearing the retro music.

This movie was not funny, as it was mentioned on the back of the DVD cover. There are a lot of obscene expletives and violence. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the viewing of this movie...brings back so many memories. Ah, the early 90s was quite an interesting time, bereft of those annoying smartphones! So happy.

Quotes from mom:
Tonya's my 5th child from husband number 4. She was always a handful. And I guess we spoiled her. Which is a goddamned hat trick when you haven't got shit your entire life. Still, I drove her to competitions, practices. I sewed her all her costumes. But to her, her mother's a monster. Generally people either love Tonya or are... not big fans.
Just like people either love America or are not big fans. Tonya was totally American.
They want a wholesome American family? ... Well. It's not gonna be easy.. But I could pull that outta my ass.
I like your hair pulled back like that. You look young.
-I'm 23, mom.
I'm not here to tell you I told you so. I'm not..
-Why are you here? What do you want?
I want you to know... I don't know. That I am on your side.

I'm trying to skate and I keep... falling in front of everyone. While... Nancy gets her own private rink where someone catches her before she falls.
You're a taker. Every cent I made went to your skating and you took it. What do you want?
Well this was a stupid fxcking idea..
-Was anything I ever did good enough for you?
You were soft.
- At three?
I made you a fighter. You never had a chance...
-You fxcked with my head. You made me think I could skate best when my life was shxt. And now my life is shzt. You made that fzcking real for me. I don't want that!
You would've picked it in a heartbeat! You should be thanking me. Not blaming me.
-Did you...? I mean when I was a kid, did you ever love me? Or anything?
You think Sonia Henie's mother loved her? Poor fzckin' you. I didn't stay home making apple brown Bettys. No, I made you a champion! Knowing you'd hate me for it. That's the sacrifice a mother makes. I wish I had a mother like me. Instead of nice. Nice gets you shzt.

Look, Nancy gets hit one time and the whole world shits... For me it was an all-the-time occurrence.
But there's no smoking on the ice.
-Oh well, I'll smoke it quietly then.
I hit her one time, with a hairbrush.
She stands out because she looks like she chops wood every morning.
Yeah, and I waitress full time to pay for your coaching.
- Yes, but she's not my child.
I don't know, Tonnie. I would never be with someone who fzckin' hit me.
- You hit dad.
That's different.
You skated like a graceless bull dyke! I was embarrassed for you.
-I'm sorry.
Your father's not paying alimony ya know? Every penny I make, every penny goes to your skating. And you weren't even fzcking trying.
-I said I was sorry.
Don't talk back to me.
I don't know what to tell you. Marrying the first idiot who says you're pretty. You fzck dumb. You don't marry dumb.

I was loved for a minute, then I was hated. Then I was just a punch line.
But do you think that CBS who was showin' the games was gonna let this ginormous
ratings fxcker not happen?
Your Honor. I don't have an education. All I know is skating. That's all I know. And I.. I'm no one... If I can't skate... I'm not... I mean, I'm not some monster. I just... I'm trying to do the best in what I know how to. ... please. Please! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate...!
The people still wanted to see me. So I became a lady boxer. I mean, why not? Violence was always what I knew anyway. America, you know... They want someone to love... but they want someone to hate. And they want it easy. But what's easy? And the haters always say, Tonya Tell the truth. But there's no such thing as truth. I mean it's bullshxt. Everyone has their own truth.
