Kenneth Branagh brings all of his customary bombast to his remake of Murder on the Orient Express, and viewers' reactions will probably primarily be based on whether they find this an enhancement or a distraction. The injection of action into the plot tends to render the viewer more passive, wondering what will happen next rather than whodunit, but also produces some memorable visuals, especially when Poirot confronts the suspects with the train looming behind him. Unnecessary chase scenes and gunfights are counterbalanced by an emphasis on the detective's internal struggles. Ultimately, however, Branagh's skills both as actor and director aren't enough to overcome the fact that this story has been done before, and better.
