Every woman plays a part-but some are more dangerous than others...

Like most women, Elizabeth Miles assumes many roles; unlike most, hers have made her a woman on the run. Living on the edge of society, Elizabeth uses her guile to relieve so-called respectable men of their ill-gotten gains. But brutal and greedy entrepreneur Oscar Thornton is out for blood. He's lost a great deal of money and is not going to forgive a woman for outwitting him. With his thugs hot on her trail, Elizabeth seizes the moment to blend in with a group of women who have an agenda of their own.

She never expects to like orunderstand these privileged women, but she soon comes to respect their intentions, forming an unlikely bond with the wealthy matriarch of the group whose son, Gideon, is the rarest of species-an honest man in a dishonest world. Elizabeth knows she's playing a risky game, and her deception could be revealed at any moment, possibly even by sharp-eyed Gideon. Nor has she been forgotten by Thornton, who's biding his time, waiting to strike. Elizabeth must draw on her wits and every last ounce of courage she possesses to keep her new life from being cut short by this vicious shadow from her past.

I enjoyed this book but I felt there was something missing...maybe just a new character I don’t know...but I’m sure the next one will be good.

Very tedious, nauseatingly so, in the last few chapters in regards to romance

A good plot idea - female grifter hides out among suffragettes who are jailed for picketing the White House - is somewhat dampened by the too-familiar cons (the last straight from the movie "The Sting") and the author's determination that other characters will sing the praises of our heroine to the point of silliness. Still, this is a surprisingly little-known bit of history, and if introducing more people to it requires several large spoonfuls of sugar, okay.

This book is suspenseful and riveting. Victoria Thompson is a fantastic author. The story is fast paced and intriguing, full of love, deception and the heroine is strong, smart and savvy. And she has a terrific cast of sidekicks. It’s a rattling good plot. All in all, one of my favs.

I really enjoyed this book. Elizabeth is an engaging heroine and I suspect her talents as a grafter will be used for good in her upcoming adventures. The other characters are also charming, and I have to applaud Victoria Thompson for including a lesbian character (Elizabeth's friend) and exploring what that life looked like at the dawn of the 20th century. I suspect the suffragette movement will also make a reappearance in future novels. Can't wait!

What a wonderful addition to the historical fiction/mystery genre that Victoria delights in writing. along with the Gaslight series, this is a welcome addition to the genre. Lizzie, a con-artist from a family of them ends up living a lie after falling in the suffragists in early 1900 in NY and Washington. In the middle of a very big con, Lizzie meets the Bates and Vanderslice families and opened up a brand new world that she thinks she will never be welcomed into. Great first book in the series. I hope to see many more stories. a little con, a little do-gooding, and little comeuppance and a whole lot of the Knickerbocker 400. Thanks for the fun read.

Set during the women's suffrage movement in 1917, this book follows a young con artist. This historical mystery is filled with interesting historical details and has a fast moving plot.

The book about suffragettes in States. It is story about Elizabeth Miles who was escaping from Thornton. She became a member of Suffragette and had to go to jail with them. I think you will enjoyed.

True history of suffragettes picketing the White House in 1917 is blended with fiction into a dramatic story.
Elizabeth Perkins-Miles is a grifter from NYC. To avoid Oscar Thornton and his thugs she befriends society women.
Excellent characters and an elaborate plot made this a very enjoyable romance & suspense novel.

I had to give up on this one. The “heroine” uses, cheats & lies to friends & enemies with equal ease. I suspect the ending wraps things up so all is forgiven. I am shocked to say this about a Victoria Thompson book. I just couldn’t care about this character.
