NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles--the inspiration for the smash hit TNT series--continue their bestselling crime-solving streak, as they pursue a shadowy psychopath keeping secrets and taking lives.

"Suspense doesn't get smarter than this."--Lee Child

Two separate homicides, at different locations, with unrelated victims, have more in common than just being investigated by Boston PD detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles. In both cases, the bodies bear startling wounds--yet the actual cause of death is unknown. It's a doubly challenging case for the cop and the coroner to be taking on, at a fraught time for both of them. As Jane struggles to save her mother from the crumbling marriage that threatens to bury her, Maura grapples with the imminent death of her own mother--infamous serial killer Amalthea Lank.

While Jane tends to her mother, there's nothing Maura can do for Amalthea, except endure one final battle of wills with the woman whose shadow has haunted her all her life. Though succumbing to cancer, Amalthea hasn't lost her taste for manipulating her estranged daughter--this time by dangling a cryptic clue about the two bizarre murders Maura and Jane are desperately trying to solve.

But whatever the dying convict knows is only a piece of the puzzle. Soon the investigation leads to a secretive young woman who survived a shocking abuse scandal, an independent horror film that may be rooted in reality, and a slew of martyred saints who died cruel and unusual deaths. And just when Rizzoli and Isles think they've cornered a devilish predator, the long-buried past rears its head--and threatens to engulf more innocent lives, including their own.

"Tess Gerritsen brings back Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles to tackle another baffling mystery . . . weaving a thriller that slowly unfolds in unexpected ways. . . . "The characters converge in dynamic, diabolical ways and, in doing so, reveal past events that continue to haunt the present day. . . . This was a really great read. It revolves around a 20 year old murder. I love the Rizzoli and Isles series.

Not bad for tv series, although I haven't seen any, but I'm judging because of the content. This is the first book of this author that I read. Ends with a hint of a possible sequel, involving one of the suspects from this time.

Tess Gerritsen continues to hit her mark with the Rizzoli & Isles series with this effort. Fast paced, kind of thinking you know who is the antagonist but more than happy to follow the ride to see how it all resolves. The secondary stories - the personal ones - are thought provoking as well. Family drama is never boring, and certainly not with these two characters.

A fast-paced and twisty entry in the Rizzoli/Isles series from Tess Gerritsen. This one features the usual satisfying blend of mystery and suspense along side the personal life dramas of Det. Jane Rizzoli and coroner Maura Isles. I had an idea of "whodunnit" somewhat early in the book, but still found the journey to the conclusion to be very satisfying.

A scary, scary read with adept twists and turns. Tess Gerritsen's medical background gives her an edge writing this kind of psychological thriller. It's one of those hidden in plain sight stories where the obvious has been very cleverly obscured.

A well done beginning and an even better ending. This is a page turning, suspenseful novel with a well thought out fast paced complex plot. The Rizolli and Isles relationship continues as does Maura's relationship with her evil mother. And is Jane's mother very rocky relationship with her husband been finally resolved and is Muara's love affair with Daniel now on again? A great surprise and thrilling ending with the door open to the next novel.

Tess Gerritsen is a fabulous writer. She writes really great stories with a very smart story line that leaves you really guessing. As one character says in the book (paraphrasing) "it's never the obvious choice." And, that's the way the book is. Every time the characters have something figured out, they are wrong - well, you know that because there is too much of the book left. But then you find out your guesses about what's happening are just as wrong. Great characters and character development. And while the end is satisfying, it opens the barn doors wide as can be for a lingering new criminal to come out of this book and onto the pages of the next or some future book featuring Rizzoli and Isles. Great read. Enjoy.
