In this first book in the series, readers meet Zoey and her cat, Sassafras. Zoey seems to me to be approximately six or seven years old. She loves science and animals. She has a pair of Thinking Goggles that help her solve problems. Sassafras is her constant companion and BFF.

Review from Mellini, Kid’s Book Club Participant: “I think that my friends will enjoy this book. The story is about a girl named Zoey, her pet cat named Sassafras and a dragon named Marshmallow. Zoey finds a little dragon, she finds out what it eats and what is wrong with it because it looks sick, the next day Zoey sees that the dragon looks even worse. My rating of this book is a 5. I want to read every book from this series!!!”

Great books to talk about caring for animals / the environment and also introduces the scientific method in an easy to understand way.

Dragons and Marshmallows is the first in a wonderful chapter book series about a kid scientist and her pet cat. In this book, Zoey takes on a new project while her mom is away on a work trip. She uses the scientific method to figure out how to nurse a baby dragon back to health. This is a lovely book, but it should be noted that the creators are not BIPOC.

At LPL, this book is available in print form and as an ebook on Hoopla.

Zoey is a great role model, and there's hardly any mention of school, which I like, since we home school. My 5 year old loves them, and later on we could re-read (or she could read them herself) and try some of Zoey's science experiments.

I loved when Marshmallow the dragon came because he was so cute, funny and magical. He got sick, at the end he had to leave. zoey was really sad. I really wish there was more to read.

My almost 5yo is loving this story! I randomly picked it off the shelf. When I finish a chapter (short 4-6 pages with pictures and picture book sized print), she wants to read the next one. There's enough pictures and chapters are short enough my 3yo likes it too!

Plus it's a girl of color explaining science!

And there's magic!

A relatable young girl uses a scientific approach to care for magical animals. Good expression of emotion and nice family dynamics with the parents. Very appealing.
