Fascinating detail, beautifully photographed, the non-actors give surprisingly fluid and affecting performances. This is an inspiring act of loving creation by the native son director-writer-cinemetographer. 5 stars easily.

This 3-hour melancholy movie, set in rural Italy in the 19th century, progresses with the pace of the seasons and the slow ripple of a canal barge pulled by a straining, plodding horse. The peasant characters are oppressed but stoic ... becoming eager participants in revolution under Garibaldi.
