Dumb movie only given good reviews because it's Japanese.

This is a very poetic movie. I think this is the warring states period so that’s why the women kill the samurai because there’s nothing to eat since the farmers keep getting drafted. You can almost compare it to post WWII Japan. The lead male has starred in other very curious roles like The Three Resurrected Drunkards and Violence at Noon. If you watch the behind the scenes, the cast and crew are very hardworking and humorous. If you’ve ever watched A Japanese Godfather, Tatsuya Nakadai wears a robe with the Onibaba face on it. Just like the women in this film recycling samurai garb, Japanese artists find a way to repurpose something very old into new exciting experiences.

Holy shit the lighting in this movie is absolutely incredible. Truly a masterpiece in terms of cinematography but the story isn't nearly as interesting.

Once this would have been a horror classic but now it is a little dated as we are more jaded and expect a higher level of special effects.

Great theme, wonderful scenes. People struggle to survive during wartime, harvesting whatever resources they can find and guarding whatever sort of assistance and companionship is available.

Not scary but amusing in many parts.
