I'll pick up pretty much anything Fiona Staples has worked on, and the art here didn't disappoint. I really loved the way this gave characters' habitual actions backstories that made sense, and the small changes that make Riverdale feel a bit more contemporary. My very very very favorite panel is the one that explains the "lipstick incident," because it's just so perfect.

Okay, so a) I love Fiona Staples' art and b) I have a big pile of Archie comics at home that I've cultivated since my childhood. This re-vamped Archie was a pleasant surprise, and I thought it did a great job of transplanting beloved characters into a modern setting while maintaining their personalities (and actually giving Betty one). I can't wait to read more! (Especially more Jughead shenanigans!)

I've never been a dedicated Archie comics person. We had a whole stack of old ones from probably the 60s up at the cottage that I'd read through and if a stray double digest happened to come my way in a waiting room somewhere I'd read it.

Archie and company are still the same here but they are very much fleshed out and you almost don't notice that this is in a modern setting. They're texting and playing video games, sure, but everyone is still the same person. Archie is still a popular goofball, Jughead still loves food but loves his friends just as much if not more, Veronica is still a spoiled brat but even she gets two seconds of humanization (even if you don't really sympathize with her). My favourite character expansion is Betty, though. She's always described as the girl next door and this really fleshes her out and I think her and Jughead are my favourite people.

I would definitely read a second volume.
