I love this book (and not just because I'm a giant KU fan) because it shows success through equal parts aspiration and perspiration. Share it with any young person holding on to a dream!
Amazing graphic novel about Scott Novosel, who walked on to the KU basketball squad during the Roy Williams era. Great story about playing hard and not giving up, with some wonderful drawing of Lawrence and KU landmarks (Allen Fieldhouse, Oak Hill Cemetery, Local Burger), as well as some of the great KU basketball legends (Jacque Vaughn, Danny Manning, Greg Ostertag). A fun read all around for kids and parents.
"He tries so hard. Do you think he's setting his sights too high?"
"Absolutely. Would you rather he set them too low?"
Kids worship their athletic heroes and dream of one day being like them. Little Scotty Novosel doesn't have the natural talent to be a top basketball player, but that doesn't stop him from sneaking into Allen Fieldhouse, sending letters to coach Roy Williams, and hoping he might somehow make the Kansas University team when he gets to college. This is the true story of how he persevered, overcame injury and discouragement, and on his fourth try became KU's first walk-on player in years. It's an engaging and uplifting tale.
Great for all ages, and not just for sports fans.
