This is one of the best books I've ever read! It's an exiting and suspenseful story while at the same time teaching you history. Accidentally skipped the first book, only read this one and still loved it! Totally recommend. -JDW 12 yrs old.

Highly recommended for avid readers in 5th grade and up, especially those with some knowledge about the War of 1812 and the alliances surrounding it. One of the best JF reads for boys that I know. Milford has succeeded in blending historical fiction, suspense, steampunk, and fun into a rigorous read that is well worth the time.

" It is very obvious that Ms. Milford did her due diligence when it came to researching the customs and rules of seafaring folk from the Revolutionary War period. The sense of honor and duty she expresses through Lucy Bluecrowne and Oliver Dexter doesn’t come across as contrived, but rather seems like exactly what one would expect from children with their backgrounds and circumstances.
