A fun romp! No more than a yarn but a well-written one. I've always found that a witty title, and/or neologisms in general are good signs of high-class wordsmithery. It reminded me vaguely of Will Shetterly's Chimera.
It melds the private-detective trope (actually, the sub-genre of bumbling private eye) with that of urban fantasy (magic is afoot).
The shy detective breaks free of the hobbles of his fathers depressive programming, rediscovers the magic of the world, meets the freer-than-thou Girl, fights the dastardly villain, and of course saves the day.
If you like this sort of thing, I recommend anything by that past master of whimsy, Richard Brautigan.
