This epic masterpiece is about a group of 16th century samurai who are hired to defend a small Japanese village that finds itself annually raided by an army of bandits who steal the meager crops harvested by the peasants. Tired of relinquishing their food supply but woefully inept in combat skills, the villagers decide to hire a band of samurai to protect them. In addition to the primary conflict between the villagers and the bandits, much of the tale revolves around young Katsushiro's coming-of-age, both sexually and emotionally. Kikuchiyo's search for acceptance forms the other major storyline. Indeed, everyone in Seven Samurai is searching: for adventure, for experience, for freedom from their oppressors.

At over 200 minutes this is one long movie. With some good editing this film can be tightened up without losing anything of importance. It is a classic, with praises heaped on it by film critics over past decades. However, in my view it is not a perfect film. One major flaw would be the excessive, clownish acting by a young Mifune. To the extent it kind off started to get onto my nerves. Otherwise, it has a great script, and was well directed by a master director.

The planting and harvest seasons fly by and so does this nearly four hour movie as its storytelling engages the viewer from start to finish. Visually stunning, emotionally draining, visceral in its impact: we can smell the poverty and famine, see the desperation, feel the hacking and spearing, sense the joy as the rice crop is planted. We are immersed in this world and its examination of the human condition, which is the mark of a masterpiece.

I wanted to see this movie as it inspired "The Magnificent Seven" plus many more movies since. The plot of "A Bug's Life" can be seen in it.
The movie started well but the plot is hard to follow at times and the over acting makes the movie look rather comical at times.
The fight scenes were disappointing and given how much people rave about this movie I thought that they would be a lot better. And over three hours is way too long.
Anyway, it's worth watching with respect to the history of cinema but the later remakes of the story are far better.

The greatest movie ever made about warriors and battle.

Was the inspiration for the western film, The Magnificent Seven. Widely considered one of the greatest films of all time by one of the greatest directors of all time. Over 3 hours of every emotion that humans can express. The struggles of the lower rungs of society have never been better put to celluloid, no matter the time period. Now on Blu-Ray at VPL!

A lot more action-filled and funny at times than I expected. Interesting to watch!

The best part is the last battle strategy and enactment. They used real horses in mud and rain. Crazy. I have watched this many times over and I know the ending. But each time I watch it, I see something new. The action sequenes are always immensely exciting every single time.
There are slow parts, but the battle scenes make the movie totally worth it.

This is a 1954 Japanese action-adventure film directed by Akira Kurosawa.
It tells the story about a 16th-century farm community led by a band of samurai warriors defending itself against a marauding army.
It is a breath-taking and fast-moving movie with a delightfully self-mocking sense of humor.

Certainly entertaining throughout but at the end of the day, that's all it really is.
