The award-winning documentary film tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, history-making journeys from the late 30s to the present day. The many first-hand accounts of the challenges faced by these talented women provide a glimpse into decades of racism and sexism that have existed in America.

What a great documentary. It was shocking that there was no mention of Billy Tipton, the female jazz musician who lived and played as a man. I do wish there was more inclusion with African American and other female jazz musicians of color but all in all a great documentary.

I can’t say enough to praise this documentary focused on the history of women in U.S. jazz music history! Very talented women musicians were prejudged based on their race or sex. Be entertained while learning about these inspirational female artists who worked so hard to seek the opportunities granted to male musicians.

great to see these musicians honoured in this doc which reveals their musical brilliance sadly seen through the double lenses of racism and sexism in the US. I look forward to the day when artists, and all others for that matter, are celebrated for who they are without the qualifying colour and gender adjectives.
