This book came out in the 80's to little attention. Sylvia Nasar's "A Beautiful Mind", the excellent biography of prize-winning mathematician John Nash (who was mentally ill), came out in 1998 and was dramatized in 2001. The movie version of Barris' book is obviously piggybacking on the story of Nash. The difference is that, while Nash publicly recognized his illness, Chuck Barris leaves us in doubt. Maybe Barris wasn't sure.

In "A Beautiful Mind" (starred Russell Crowe), Nash a Princeton(?) professor, created life-long friends as well as a "dangerous" secret life in which he spied for the government. Doctors eventually helped him and he realized that his second life was an illusion. Now, THAT was a great life and a great movie.

Chuck Barris? Perhaps his aberrations were the result of wanting to do something truly important. Or maybe they were acting out his reaction to the scorn heaped on him for degrading American culture.

This movie was based upon an “autobiography” written by Chuck Barris, the creator of “The Dating Game” and “The Gong Show.” These mostly daytime pseudo-reality shows were highly popular in the 1970’s. In the “autobiography” Barris writes that he was a secret hitman, a contract agent for a government agency such as the CIA or other clandestine organization. Barris claims that he killed 33 people for this organization. In part of the film, possibly because of the pressure of killing these people, Barris was near psychotic break with reality (no pun intended). The genius in the movie, is one really does not know if this so-called secret life is a real confession or a just another game on the people to make more money.

Interesting story of Chuck Barris' career in the television industry and as a CIA hitman. Directed by George Clooney and beautifully filmed in a hyper-stylized manner to portray the events as dreamy memories; is it truth or is it fiction? That's up to you to decide.

Director... George Clooney. An interesting film which combines romancce with a spy thriller.

Seldom have I been as scared watching a movie as with this movie. There are enemies around every corner, everything you're told probably is a lie and when you're not looking, it's your best friend that will kill you. I don't know how anyone lives in this pit of vipers, willingly. I just don't know.
If you read the original book, it's amazing how matter-of-fact Barris is about everything. In one passage he says "First I had to go over here for a meeting, then later I had to hurry over here, then I had to kill this guy, then I had a meeting with Mr. Goldberg over at NBC."
I just started laughing, it was like "WHAT? Excuse me?" I guess after you've killed 20 odd people it just doesn't mean that much to you anymore. This story is chilling.

A brilliant, eccentric project that actually improves upon repeat viewing. Sam Rockwell, as usual, is terrific, and the trippy cinematography works perfectly with the script.

There were times in this movie where I actually believed Sam Rockwell WAS Barris.

Clooney's first directoral attempt is a success. But read the book first.

"My name is Charles Hirsch Barris. I've written pop songs, I've been a television producer. In addition I have murdered 33 human beings.”
