A Melbourne attorney with questionable ethics (fixing horse races) still demonstrates loyalties to old mates as he gets entangled in a missing son case, elite hi jinks, and drug trade gone bad. He also takes the risk of opening up his heart again to a hard-charging, wryly funny newspaper reporter, who's a wiz with condiments. Rather than a purloined letter, there's a music CD that's a clue hiding in plain sight, waiting for the right music aficionado to recognize. Set in Australia, a macho culture that has a higher violence/swearing/sexism quotient.

This first season, while embracing the grief stricken pro who drowns his sorrow in alcohol trope, also breaks out of that box with solid acting, outstanding writing, plenty of twists, a bit of sexy fun and at least one heavily decomposed corpse per episode! Highly recommended.

I enjoyed it. Sometimes between the accents and the complicated story lines I got a little lost. I think also that the story almost always has a big conspiracy involving crime organizations or the government or both and that can be a little daunting for the viewer. Can't he just solve crime involving regular people. But the production and the scripts are pretty good. Plus Guy Pearce is very likable and watchable as the lead. Great alternative to the usual BBC thrillers.

Fairly good. Actually, I wanted him to take a shower, wash his hair, shave & stop wearing that really stupid coat.

Above average detective thriller further elevated by Guy Pierce's performance.

Nice pilot and follow up. Too bad there are only three episodes on DVD. May have to read up on Peter Temple's books on Jack's other adventures.

If the words “Australian noir starring Guy Pearce” don’t have you clicking for the hold button I don’t know what to tell you. Episode 1 suffers the fate of many series starters: too many characters and a lot of establishing exposition (you still have to watch it) but the second one is ace.

Watchable, but not great. Acting is good, characters are interesting, stories have potential.......but something is missing.

And today...there's 13 other cattle out there trying to sink us.
But some bunny's gotta win, eh?
Why not us, Jack?

-I mean, there's no crime making money, so they say.
-Well, no, not unless you know in advance that the planning minister's gonna award you the 7ender, I guess.
-Yeah, well, that would start
to smell like a crime.
