"When a young man notices several thefts of sought-after Tibetan mastiffs from local farms, he decides to sell his family's dog before it is stolen and sold on the black market. His father, an aging Tibetan herder, is furious when he discovers their dog missing. No stars from me, either. Just a sad, dreary, hopeless, cruel, wrist-slitter of a film. From a different perspective, though, considering the brutal destruction of the Tibetan culture some 50 years ago, the fact that these Mastiffs were so faithful and useful to the family as protector, herder, and thought of even as deities, the movie makes more sense; i.e., the father had most probably lost his grandparents, maybe parents, to the Chinese, land, cattle, etc., as well as all the shrines and temples they so revered in a religious/mystical way of life, and leaving him and his family in this day and age on this land with nothing. And now, at last, it came down to his own dog the Chinese wanted, which, to him, could have no price.

This is one of the very few films from Tibet that I have seen. It is pretty slow and most of the time not much is happening. However, through this film you get to know a little bit about the daily life of an average Tibetan herder family, caught in a construction boom fueled by a rapidly developing Chinese economy. The ending is shocking and would have animal lovers up in arms. So it is not an uplifting film. In Tibetan with subtitles.

As an animal lover who cannot bear to see them harmed by man in any way, this movie was much too painful to recommend. VERY slow moving, but heads inexorabaly to an obvious conclusion, I could not give any stars.
