A New York Times Bestselling Author -- Anne Perry takes us beneath the glittering surface of wealthy Victorian society into a nightmare world of fear and intimation, where women are often blamed for the violence against them, and powerful men take what they want. The horrifying rape and apparent suicide of Catherine Quixwood, wife of a wealthy merchant banker, falls outside the new jurisdiction of Special Branch head Thomas Pitt, but so pervasively offensive are the rumors about the victim that Pitt quietly takes a hand in the investigation. Yet even with the help of his ingenious wife, Charlotte, and his former superior, Victor Narraway, Pitt is stumped. And the path to the truth is deeply troubling.

This is an uncomfortable book, because the crime of rape is horrendous, yet the moral debate around rape and the backlash on the victims of rape was and is so difficult. Perry manages to capture both the Victorian and modern thinking about rape, and through her characters explores all the difficult sides of rape, intimidation, greed, and betrayal, from 'decent women don't get raped' to 'what if it were my daughter'. I had to put the book down a couple of times because the subject matter is so dark, and the emotions of the book's characters so raw, and the hypocrisy of many so real.

That said, I am glad I picked it up again, and glad I read it. Truly a literary triumph for Perry! Just be forewarned, like much great literature, not an easy read.

WHY CANNOT THIS LIBRARY LIST THE # OF EACH BOOK IN THE SERIES. IF I KNOW THIS IS #5 I MIGHT LIKE TO START WITH AN EARLIER ONE OF THE CHARLOTTE & THOMAS PITT NOVELS

Awesome study in character as usual. I love the way she explores taboo subjects and their treatment by society in the midst of a murder mystery.

I have always enjoyed this series, but this is the best book yet! I was on the edge of my seat right up to the last page! Great characters, great plot--I look forward to the next book!

Darker than the previous books in this series, but still a compelling story.

There was a bit of a game going on in this book -- who will break down first. I also missed a clue at the beginning, so I spent the whole book thinking the criminal was someone else. The book is set in Victorian times, but the issues surrounding rape, sadly, are still relevant.
